Nils (probably the americanization of his name as he is listed on theDanish Emmigration Database and all Danish Censuses as Niels) couldread and write, but did not speak english. Immigrated to the U. S. in1872. Danish Emmigration Database shows contract no. 322400 dated May7, 1872 bound for New York State, USA. His occupation was listed asTomrer (Carpenter). They actually traveled by the Steamer Moravian ofthe Allen Line from Liverpool to Baltimore arriving on June 7, 1872.The Moravian was captained by John Graham. Niels listed his occupation on the ships manifest as a mechanic. The family settled in Frankford (near Spring Valley) in Mower County, Minesota for theperiod 1872 - 1882. They then moved to the family homestead inSinnott Township, Marshall County, Minnesota in 1882. They madetheir homestead the NW corner of Section 1. S. P. Jensen evidentlytook over the original homestead. In 1902 Nils was shown as the ownerof the 80 acres in the SW corner of Section 11. This was evidentlyadded to between 1902 and 1909, possibly when it was taken over byLaura. In 1909 Laura was shown as the owner of 120 acres in the SWpart of Section 11. In 1900 Nils and Maren were off the farm in ahome that was owned free and clear. He died unexpectedly frominjuries he suffered when he fell off a buggy on June 19, 1902. His father and mother were both born in Denmark.

Another son James was listed with the family in the US 1880 Census.He was listed as 26 years old at that time. This census was at Frankford in Mower County, Minnesota.

Niels became a citizen of the United States in 1879.
