Martin was born in S. Vrensted, Hjorring, Denmark and came to America with his parents at the age of six (ca. 1872). The family lived in Frankford near Spring Valley, Minnesota for the period 1872 - 1882.His boyhood home was the homestead in Sinnott township that hisparents had homesteaded when they moved to Marshall County, Minnesota. He stayed on after the death of his parents until 1915. He marriedLaura Toombs, of Stephen, Minnesota, in 1891. They raised eight children. Laura died in 1920 and Martin had two subsequent marriages.

In 1906, he accepted the position of rural mail carrier on RR 2 out ofStephen when the service was first started. He was on of the firstthree mailmen in Marshall County. He served on this job for 25 years until his retirement in 1931 was necessitated because of failing eyesight. For a several years he resided at the family home locatedj ust south of the village. In 1934 he moved to live with his daughter, Hazel in So. St. Paul, Minnesota.

He was a member of both the Woodmen and I. O. O. F. lodges and servedas the Noble Grand of the latter for several terms. He was genial and friendly, and held in high regard by a wide circle of friends.

Martin became a citizen in 1872 according to the 1900 US Census.
